A Nissan Maxima from the late 1990s has accumulated almost $80,000 in parking fees since it was abandoned three years ago.
According to a report from newspaper the Courier Mail, the Nissan was parked in a shopping centre in Brisbane back in 2022, but was never collected by its owner – with the car park charging $68 per day.
While the Maxima is only worth an estimated $4000 today, the premium Japanese sedan was worth more than $40,000 when purchased new – almost half the estimated value of parking fees wracked up in three short years.
The vehicle is now covered in dirt and dust, and appears to have sustained damage while at the shopping centre, with a front corner indicator hanging out of its mount by electrical wire.
Abandoned vehicles are typically the responsibility of the local council, however, state laws can often dictate how long a vehicle can remain in one location before it’s towed – in some cases, the vehicle cannot be moved unless it has been unregistered for six months or more.
In Melbourne, a 1986 Ford ZL Fairlane has been parked at Northcote Plaza for approximately 15 years.
According to 9News, the owner of the Ford passed away around the same time the vehicle was parked, but has remained there at the request of the owner’s son as a tribute to his late father.
