Most car manufacturers are winding down production of V8 engines – but GWM has just unveiled its own brand-new twin-turbo V8 at the Shanghai Motor Show.
GWM is set to launch a new ‘super luxury’ brand called Confidence Auto, to sit above its other sub-brands – which include Haval, Tank, Ora, and Wey.

According to an earlier report from Car News China, GWM’s Confidence Auto could launch its own luxury sedans and supercars to compete against the likes of Bentley and Lamborghini.
Powering these models will be this 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, coupled with plug-in hybrid technology.

While specifications remain unknown at this stage, the engine appears to use a ‘hot vee’ configuration, in which the cylinder heads flow to turbochargers mounted within the engine’s valley.

BMW was the first to use this configuration in a production car, and has also been used in high-performance cars such as the Mercedes-AMG GT, the Cadillac CT6-V, and the Porsche Cayenne Turbo.
On the back of the transmission also appears to be a transfer case, suggesting GWM’s V8 will deliver power to all four wheels.

This is the second year in a row GWM has unveiled an eight-cylinder engine.
At the 2024 Beijing Motor Show, the company showed off the ‘Souo H8’ – a flat-eight engine, similar to those found in the Porsche 911 and Subaru models – but believed to be designed for use in a large motorcycle platform.
