Volkswagen Australia has introduced the Touareg R, its first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), and announced plans to expand its PHEV lineup.
This move aligns with the forthcoming Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES), which aims to diversify vehicle offerings in the Australian market.
The Touareg R is priced at $129,990 plus on-road costs, featuring a 250 kW/450 Nm petrol V6 engine combined with a 100 kW/400 Nm electric motor.
This configuration delivers a total power output of 340 kW and 700 Nm, enabling the SUV to reach 0-100 km/h in 5.1 seconds.
Volkswagen's marketing manager, Ralph Beckmann, discussed potential future additions to their plug-in hybrid offerings, such as new versions of the Golf and Tiguan.
However, he noted that the current Tiguan model would not receive a PHEV version, anticipating instead that such an option might be available with the next-generation Tiguan, expected by March 2025.
The implementation of the NVES has allowed Volkswagen to enhance its position in negotiations for a wider range of new-energy vehicles.
The policy facilitates access to additional production capabilities, notably for upcoming models including the electric SUV ID.4.
The current Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) exemptions for PHEVs will end on March 30, 2025.
These exemptions provide tax savings on novated leases, which may influence the consumer decision-making process until they expire.
Cupra, a subsidiary of Volkswagen, is also preparing to introduce PHEV versions of its Formentor SUV and Leon hatchback, reflecting a group-wide strategy to incorporate more efficient powertrains in response to new emissions regulations.
