2025 Ford Ranger Plug-In Hybrid Unveiled with 3.5 Tonne Towing, 'Full' Off-Road Capabilities, and V2L

Ford has officially introduced the Ranger Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) at the IAA TRANSPORTATION event in Germany.

The new model offers full towing and off-road capabilities, alongside electric-only driving, expanding Ford's range of pickups in Australia and New Zealand. Initial customer deliveries are expected in 2025.

The Ranger PHEV is powered by a 2.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder EcoBoost petrol engine, paired with a 75kW electric motor and an 11.8kWh (usable) battery. The vehicle has been designed to maintain the towing and payload capabilities expected of the Ranger while also delivering an electric-only range of over 45km.

According to Ford, this combination allows the Ranger PHEV to meet the demands of both work and recreational use, without sacrificing performance.

The powertrain is integrated with a new Modular Hybrid Transmission (MHT), which places the electric motor between the engine and transmission. This design enables hybrid driving, with the battery positioned between specially engineered frame rails.

Ford has indicated that the Ranger PHEV can be charged using a standard household plug, reaching full charge overnight, providing sufficient power for various job site tools or camping equipment.

The vehicle retains the towing and off-road performance for which the Ranger is known, offering a maximum towing capacity of 3,500kg. It also includes Ford’s latest Advanced 4WD system, a dual-range transfer case, and a rear differential lock to improve off-road performance.

In addition, drivers can select from multiple driving modes: Auto EV, EV Now, EV Later, and EV Charge, depending on their preference for electric or hybrid driving.

One of the new features introduced in the Ranger PHEV is Pro Power Onboard, which allows customers to power tools and devices directly from the vehicle's onboard battery, without needing an external generator.

The system offers up to 6.9kW of power, including a 2.3kW output in the cabin and two outlets in the load bed with a 3.45kW limit each.

In addition to the standard PHEV Wildtrak, Sport, and XLT models, Ford is launching a limited-edition Stormtrak variant. This model includes unique design features, such as 18-inch alloy wheels, a honeycomb grille, and the new Chill Grey paint colour exclusive to the Stormtrak.

Inside, the cabin features premium materials, a B&O sound system, and several advanced technologies like a 360-degree camera, Pro Trailer Backup Assist, and Matrix LED headlamps.

Andrew Birkic, President and CEO of Ford Australia and New Zealand, remarked, “The Ranger PHEV delivers the benefits of electrification alongside the performance that Ranger owners expect. We focused on ensuring our first PHEV pickup would be capable of handling both work and off-road environments, as well as providing electric-only functionality for day-to-day use.”

The Ranger PHEV will be produced in Silverton, South Africa, with customer deliveries slated to begin in 2025.
