The BYD Sealion 7 and Geely EX5 have each been awarded a five-star ANCAP safety rating under the 2023–2025 criteria. These battery electric medium SUVs were assessed for their protection of occupants and vulnerable road users, as well as the effectiveness of their crash avoidance technologies.
The BYD Sealion 7, launched in Australia and New Zealand in February 2025, achieved 87 per cent for Adult Occupant Protection and 93 per cent for Child Occupant Protection. Full marks were recorded in side impact and oblique pole tests, while weak chest protection was noted for the rear adult passenger in the full width test.

It also scored 76 per cent for Vulnerable Road User Protection and 78 per cent for Safety Assist, with strong performance in autonomous emergency braking scenarios. A direct child presence detection system is standard, alerting occupants if a child is left in the rear seat.
The Geely EX5, introduced in March 2025 for Australia and April 2025 for New Zealand, also secured a five-star rating. It scored 86 per cent for Adult Occupant Protection and 87 per cent for Child Occupant Protection.

While the Geely EX5 earned full points in side impact and far side tests, a structural penalty was applied following weld detachment around the A-pillar in the frontal offset test. Its child presence detection system did not meet ANCAP’s requirements and was not awarded points.
In crash avoidance tests, the EX5 performed well in lane support and motorcycle detection, contributing to a Safety Assist score of 85 per cent and 83 per cent for Vulnerable Road User Protection.

According to ANCAP, the two new results increase the number of five-star rated electrified vehicles in Australia and New Zealand to 98. Both models come standard with dual frontal, side chest, side head, and centre airbags, as well as a full suite of driver assistance features.
