BYD Australia has officially expanded its local line-up with the introduction of the Seal 6 Sedan and Seal 6 Touring, targeting the mid-size passenger vehicle market with a new plug-in hybrid powertrain. Orders are scheduled to open on April 9th.

The entry-level Seal 6 Sedan Essential is priced from $34,990 plus on-road costs, while the higher-grade Seal 6 Touring Premium starts at $39,990 plus on-road costs.

Both models utilise BYD’s latest DM 5.0 Super Hybrid technology, which pairs a 1.5-litre Atkinson-cycle petrol engine with an electric motor and the manufacturer's LFP Blade Battery.

The petrol engine achieves a claimed thermal efficiency of 46 per cent, a figure the manufacturer states helps the vehicle reach a total driving range exceeding 1,000 kilometres on a single tank.

According to WLTC standards, which are labelled as WLTP-equivalent, the Seal 6 Sedan Essential offers an estimated combined range of over 1,400km, while the Touring Premium variant is expected to exceed 1,300km.

The Sedan Essential features a 10.08kWh battery providing 55km of EV-only range, whereas the Touring Premium’s 19kWh battery allows for up to 100km of electric driving.

This pricing positions the Seal 6 Sedan competitively against the market-leading Toyota Camry Hybrid, which starts at $39,990 plus on-road costs for the entry-level Ascent.

The Seal 6 Touring wagon also faces competition from hybrid SUVs at similar price points, such as the MG HS Hybrid+ which begins at $40,990 drive-away and the GWM Haval Jolion Hybrid starting from $31,790 drive-away, though these rivals don't offer the same EV-only driving capability.

Other plug-in hybrid rivals include the Geely Starray EM-i, priced from $37,490 plus on-road costs, and the Chery Tiggo 7 Super Hybrid, currently available from $34,990 driveaway.

The Seal 6 range offers two distinct body styles, with the Sedan featuring a more aerodynamic shape, and the Touring wagon providing up to 1,535 litres of cargo space with the rear seats folded.

Inside the cabin, standard equipment includes an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.8-inch central touchscreen, and wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Safety features across the range include seven airbags, the DiPilot Level 2 Intelligent Driving Assistance suite, and autonomous emergency braking.

BYD Australia Chief Operating Officer Stephen Collins said the new models continue the brand's commitment to offering cleaner mobility without sacrificing performance or value.

The vehicles are expected to arrive in local showrooms following the commencement of orders this week.
