Mahindra has unveiled its new global ute in Mumbai, with the Scorpio Lifestyler name to be used in India and Mahindra Lifestyler adopted for international markets.

The new body-on-frame ute is due to launch in India by April 2027, with Australia and New Zealand named among the target export markets.

Mahindra is targeting a 3.5-tonne braked towing capacity and a 6300kg gross combination mass, placing the Lifestyler in line with the Toyota HiLux on those headline figures.

Indian pricing is set to start from under 19.79 lakh, which converts to about A$29,000, although that is not Australian pricing.

Local launch timing, Australian specification, engines and final pricing are still to be confirmed.

The ute was first shown as a concept in Cape Town, South Africa, in August 2023, before this production-intent reveal in Mumbai.

It has been designed at Mahindra India Design Studio in Mumbai and developed at Mahindra Research Valley in Chennai.

Mahindra says the Lifestyler uses its next-generation body-on-frame architecture and has been engineered for global markets.

The ute also continues Mahindra’s broader product push, following recent Australian updates to the Scorpio SUV.

Dr Velusamy R, President, Automotive Business, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., said the project was intended to create a global ute while retaining Mahindra’s focus on capability and value.

“From the outset, our vision was to create a world-class global pickup that raises the bar for the segment while remaining true to Mahindra's strengths in authentic capability and value,” Dr Velusamy said.

“The Scorpio Lifestyler is a testament to the strong product development capabilities at Mahindra Research Valley (MRV).

“Built on our advanced next-generation body-on-frame architecture, it has been engineered to deliver the capability, durability, safety and refinement demanded by customers around the world.”

Pratap Bose, Chief Design and Creative Officer, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., said the ute had been shaped around work, leisure and exploration use cases.

“The Scorpio Lifestyler is inspired by how our customers work, play and explore,” Bose said.

“Combining bold exterior design, plush interiors and SUV-like comfort with unmistakable Mahindra toughness, it brings style and refinement to every journey.”

Three versions shown

Mahindra has shown the Lifestyler in three different expressions called Valley, Reef and Trail.

The Valley Edition is finished in Artemis Grey and is positioned around work and leisure use.

The Reef Edition is finished in Aquareef and is pitched at outdoor-focused buyers.

The Trail Edition is finished in Sahara Beige and is presented as the more adventure-oriented version.

Nalinikanth Gollagunta, CEO, Automotive Division, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., said the company sees growing demand for utes that combine capability with technology, safety, comfort and everyday usability.

“We are investing in building awareness, strengthening our network and creating the right ownership experience for this category,” Gollagunta said.

For Australia, the key question now is how closely the eventual local-market Lifestyler follows the global targets, particularly on towing, safety equipment and pricing.
