September Car Sales Up Across Australia Compared to 2024

Over 106,000 new vehicles were sold during September 2025 in Australia, an increase of 6.95 per cent compared to the same month last year.

Australians purchased 106,891 new vehicles in September 2025, according to data from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries and the Electric Vehicle Council, with a total of 938,959 new vehicles sold during the year. 

This marks a 6.95 per cent increase in new vehicle sales during the month compared to September last year. 

In year-to-date sales figures, Toyota continues to rank at the top, with 181,809 new vehicles sold in 2025 thus far. Ford has overtaken Mazda for second place, recording 70,881 and 70,242 sales, respectively. 

For monthly model sales, the Toyota HiLux has reclaimed first position over the Ford Ranger, with 5,047 examples of the popular ute model sold, outselling its rival by 180 units. 

A stronger month for the Tesla Model Y compared to August placed the electric SUV in first position for BEV sales and in third overall for sales figures during September, with 3,927 examples sold. 

SUVs continue to dominate the Australian market, posting 65,511 sales, accounting for over 61.3 per cent of sales during the month. So far this year, 568,603 new SUVS have been sold in Australia, making up 60.5 per cent of new vehicle sales. 

Passenger vehicles made up 12.9 per cent of new vehicle sales in September, with 13,746 sold. In year-to-date sales figures, 127,865 passenger vehicles have been sold, making up 13.6 per cent of sales. 

New vehicle sales increased in New South Wales (by 7.34 per cent), the Northern Territory (3.61 per cent), Queensland (3.84 per cent), South Australia (6.55 per cent), Victoria (10.32 per cent), and Western Australia (8 per cent) during September, while sales decreased in the Australian Capital Territory by 5.3 per cent.
