The 2025 Toyota Crown Estate has been unveiled in Japan as a hybrid and plug-in hybrid, adding to the sedan and high-riding ‘Crossover’ body styles already on sale from Toyota since 2023.
While the Crown Estate mirrors the other variants from nose to B-pillar, the vehicle features a second-row of seats which can lay flat, opening up the wagon body from 570 litres of luggage area to 1470 litres – and creating two metres of flat space.
Also standard is a small pull-out deck chair and table, allowing the space to be used for meals.

At the other end, the Crown is fitted with a 2.5-litre non-turbo four-cylinder petrol hybrid engine, with two electric motors providing all-wheel drive – for a combined power output of 225kW.
Alternatively, buyers can also option a plug-in hybrid powertrain, which is essentially the same powertrain but with a larger 51Ah battery, allowing up to 89 kilometres of electric-only driving range (WLTC) before the petrol engine kicks in.
Toyota claims fuel economy of five litres per 100 kilometres for the traditional hybrid, and 4.9L/100km for the plug-in hybrid.

Inside, the five-seater Crown features dual 12.3-inch screens – one for the digital instrument cluster and the other for infotainment duties – while a sunroof can be optioned.
Speaking of options, buyers can also get a full body-kit with larger alloy wheels from Modellista, the Japanese tuning arm of Toyota.
While the Crown is celebrating its 70th birthday this year, the model hasn’t been sold in Australia since 1988 – with Toyota Australia so far ruling out adding the model to its local line-up.

However, due to Australia’s importation laws, hybrid models under 25 years not sold by the car manufacturer can be privately imported, potentially making the Crown Estate a perfect choice for those looking for the practicality of a large passenger wagon and the efficiency of a hybrid, but who don’t want an SUV.
According to Japanese newspaper Nikkan Jidosha Shimbun, in 2024, sales of the Toyota Crown in its home country exceeded 60,000 – the highest number of sales for the model in 11 years.
