After almost half a century on sale in Australia, the Mazda 6 will be axed from the local line-up.
Launched in 1978 as the 626, the model was Mazda’s mid-size sedan – sitting between the smaller 323 and larger 929 – but was eventually renamed the Mazda 6 as part of a brand-wide refresh in 2002.
“We owe a lot to Mazda6 in helping to make the Mazda brand what it is today,” Managing Director for Mazda Australia, Vinesh Bhindi, said at the announcement.
“Coinciding with the origins of our ‘Zoom-Zoom’ philosophy, its local introduction in 2002 contributed to a paradigm shift for the brand, and it immediately became widely praised as the benchmark for front-wheel drive dynamics and involvement.”

According to Mazda, almost 150,000 examples of Mazda 6 sedans and wagons have been sold in Australia over the two decades.
Production of the Mazda 6 has already ceased, however the company says there is still ample stock available of all variants at Mazda dealerships.
It’s understood Mazda Australia will instead focus on petrol, diesel, and hybrid SUVs – together with the Mazda 2 and Mazda 3 small cars, the MX-5 convertible, and the BT-50 ute.
According to data provided by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), just 1354 examples of the Mazda 6 were sold in 2024 – a decline of 11.4 per cent compared to 2023 – compared to the segment leader, the Toyota Camry, which sold 15,401 over the same period.
Meanwhile, the all-new electric Mazda 6e made its debut at the Brussels Motor Show 2025 in Belgium earlier this month, with batteries powering a single electric motor at the rear axle producing 180kW and 320Nm.
Driving range for the Mazda 6e is claimed to be up to 552 kilometres on a single charge.
There’s no word as to whether the Mazda 6e will eventually take the Mazda 6’s place in Australia, but a spokesperson for the brand told CarSauce the “Mazda 6e has been developed for the European market.
“It is under study for overseas markets.”
