The 2026 KGM SsangYong Musso EV has made its first public appearance in South Korea, with the model to be the company’s first electric ute.
KGM – the new name for SsangYong in its native market – has launched Musso as its own sub-brand, suggesting there may be several different models launching under the Musso umbrella.
Currently, the ute known in Australia as the Musso is badged as the Rexton Sport in South Korea.
In recent days, the company also released preliminary sketches of another Musso, this time with a new front-end look and dual exhaust tips – suggesting it will be powered by either petrol or diesel.
While it’s possible the future petrol or diesel Musso maintains a heavy-duty ladder-frame chassis – the preferred set-up for off-road workhorse utes, such as the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux – the Musso EV is based on the same underpinnings as the KGM SsangYong Torres mid-size SUV.
The Korean carmaker has confirmed the Musso EV will utilise batteries sourced from Chinese electric-car giant BYD, providing up to 500 kilometres of driving range.
As with the O100 concept it’s based on, the Musso EV has a slim LED light bar across the front-end, with additional lights – likely to be the actual headlights – blended into the lower part of the front bumper bar.
Meanwhile, the sketches of the petrol/diesel Musso show the ute adopting a squarer face, with the full-width daytime-running lights echoing elements of the Toyota Tundra pick-up and the Hyundai Palisade.
A spokesperson for KGM SsangYong in Australia told CarSauce there are plans to bring the Musso EV to market locally, but “potentially with a different name to the [South Korean] version”.
“[The] updated Musso is also on our radar with details to follow," the spokesperson added.
