In July, Mercedes-Benz announced the CLE-Class, a sophisticated blend of the C-Class and E-Class in a two-door format. The line is set to be enriched with the addition of the AMG 53 and 63 models, which are anticipated to make their debut next year according to a Motor1 UK report.
Recent spy shots from Germany offer a glimpse into the forthcoming AMG variants. The CLE 53 AMG Coupe prototype, identifiable by its distinctive round exhausts and a blue roof, promises a sportier profile.
Similarly, the convertible presumed to be the 63 AMG showcases a unique exhaust setup and a Panamericana grille, signaling its range-topping status.
The CLE 53 AMG is expected to house a robust 3.0-litre inline-six engine, surpassing the 375 bhp and 369 lb-ft torque of the CLE 450 4Matic. The speculated performance parallels that of the GLE 53 SUV, indicating an enhanced driving experience in both coupe and cabriolet forms.
As for the CLE 63 AMG, current indications suggest it might feature a hybrid powertrain, a strategic move mirroring the E63's transition from V8 to an electrified I6.
The CLE's design exhibits a compelling blend of the 'W206' C-Class sedan's front-end aesthetics and the broader, sportier appeal of a luxury coupe. With dimensions surpassing the outgoing C-Class coupe and the W206 sedan, the CLE offers a more commanding presence.
It incorporates elements like an upturned grille, sleek lines, and a lower profile, coupled with distinctive rear LED lighting inspired by the EQ design family and twin trapezoidal exhaust tips.
Inside, the CLE borrows heavily from the E-Class, featuring a 12.3-inch digital display and an 11.9-inch touchscreen with the latest MBUX software. Options like a Burmester sound system and dynamic ambient lighting enhance the luxury feel, while safety systems include advanced driver assists and parking sensors.
Globally, Mercedes-Benz will offer five powertrains for the CLE, all featuring 48-volt mild-hybrid technology. Australian models are expected to include the CLE200 2.0-litre four-cylinder and potentially the CLE300 4Matic, with the high-end CLE450 also a possibility. The plug-in hybrid variants, however, will not be available initially.
In terms of pricing and availability, the consolidation of the medium and large coupes suggests a new pricing strategy.
In Australia, the CLE range is likely to start between $85-95K, with higher-end models like the E450 and potential AMG versions reaching higher price points. Mercedes-Benz Australia has confirmed the local release of both the CLE coupe and cabriolet for the second half of 2024.
