Toyota's GR Yaris, known for its manual-only option, is set to receive significant upgrades in 2024. These enhancements include the addition of an eight-speed automatic transmission, available alongside the existing six-speed manual. This new transmission is designed to anticipate shifting needs and boasts world-class gear-shifting speeds due to its heat-resistant friction material.
In terms of power, the vehicle's turbocharged 1.6-litre three-cylinder engine will see a boost from 200kW and 370Nm of torque to 224kW at 6500rpm and 400Nm between 3250rpm and 4600rpm. To further bolster the car's performance, Toyota has increased body rigidity through additional spot welding and expanded use of structural adhesive, alongside more bolts securing the body to the shock absorbers.
The GR Yaris will also feature a Circuit drive mode with anti-lag control, a recalibrated speed limiter, and a redesigned, more ergonomic interior. This includes a 15-degree tilt of the control panel towards the driver, improved switch positioning, and a lower driving position by 25mm. The car also sports a new 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.
External modifications include restyled headlights and tail lights, a redesigned front bumper with larger cooling openings, and an air escape at the rear lower garnish to enhance stability. The high-mounted rear brake light has been relocated for customization purposes.
In preparing for the automatic version, Toyota's TGR World Rally Team drivers tested the new transmission across diverse road conditions, contributing to a model that weighs just 20kg more at 1300kg. While there's no confirmation yet on whether the GR Corolla will also receive these updates, Toyota's commitment to expanding the joy of driving is evident in these enhancements.
