Toyota has reported that the Yaris family of vehicles has achieved 10 million global sales during its 25th year of production. This accomplishment places the Yaris alongside other Toyota models, such as the Corolla, Camry, RAV4, HiLux, and LandCruiser, which have also reached eight-figure sales numbers.
Introduced as a compact car, the Yaris has consistently integrated new technologies and concepts into its design over the years. The first-generation Yaris won the European Car of the Year award in 2000 and the Japan Car of the Year title. In 2021, the fourth-generation model also received the European Car of the Year award and became Toyota Australia's most fuel-efficient car, with hybrid models achieving a combined fuel consumption of 3.3 liters/100 km.
The Yaris has been equipped with various safety features, including front-center airbags for protecting front-seat occupants' heads and a driver-assist system that helps avoid collisions with pedestrians and other vehicles at intersections.
To cater to diverse customer preferences, the Yaris family has grown to encompass the GR Yaris performance sports car and the Yaris Cross urban SUV in 2020. In Australia, the Yaris lineup has collectively sold 361,982 vehicles, with 81,983 first-generation units, known as the Echo, sold between 1999 and 2006.
The Yaris has production facilities in several countries, such as Japan, Brazil, China, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Thailand, France, and the Czech Republic. The model's initial production began in January 1989 at the Takaoka plant in Japan.
