BYD Seal 6 Receives Five-Star ANCAP Safety Rating
The BYD Seal 6 has received a five-star ANCAP rating under the same protocol as the Toyota Camry, strengthening its fleet and rideshare appeal.
The BYD Seal 6 has received a five-star ANCAP safety rating in Australia and New Zealand, covering both the sedan and Touring wagon.
Assessed under ANCAP’s 2023-2025 criteria, the plug-in hybrid recorded 92 per cent for Adult Occupant Protection, 90 per cent for Child Occupant Protection, 84 per cent for Vulnerable Road User Protection and 84 per cent for Safety Assist.
The result gives BYD a current five-star rating for a passenger car likely to be considered by private, fleet and rideshare buyers.
It is notable because the Toyota Camry, Australia’s dominant mid-size sedan, also holds a five-star rating under the same 2023-2025 ANCAP protocol, and is the go to for fleet use.
That parity matters for business use, as many fleet and rideshare operators require vehicles to carry a five-star ANCAP rating before they are considered for purchase or approval.

ANCAP’s latest release also included five-star ratings for the MG4 EV Urban and Tesla Model Y L.
The Skoda Octavia retained its five-star rating after reassessment of vehicles built from July 2025.
| Model | ANCAP safety rating | Adult Occupant Protection | Child Occupant Protection | Vulnerable Road User Protection | Safety Assist |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| BYD Seal 6 | Five stars (2025) | 92 per cent | 90 per cent | 84 per cent | 84 per cent |
| Toyota Camry | Five stars (2024) | 95 per cent | 87 per cent | 84 per cent | 81 per cent |
| MG4 EV Urban | Five stars (2025) | 87 per cent | 86 per cent | 85 per cent | 82 per cent |
| Skoda Octavia | Five stars (2025) | 85 per cent | 81 per cent | 81 per cent | 82 per cent |
| Tesla Model Y L | Five stars (2025) | 91 per cent | 84 per cent | 86 per cent | 92 per cent |
ANCAP said the Seal 6’s passenger compartment remained stable in the frontal offset test, with good protection for all critical body areas of the front passenger.
The car scored maximum points in the full-width frontal, side impact and oblique pole tests.
ANCAP also noted a moderate risk to occupants of an oncoming vehicle in the frontal offset compatibility assessment.
A centre airbag is standard and was assessed as providing good head protection for both front occupants in side-impact scenarios.
The rating applies to BYD Seal 6 vehicles built from April 2026 and sold from May 2026.
ANCAP lists the rating expiry as December 2031.
For child occupant protection, the Seal 6 scored maximum points in dynamic tests using six-year-old and 10-year-old child dummies.
The model has ISOFIX anchorages on the rear outboard seats and top tether anchorages for all rear seating positions.
ANCAP said most typical child restraints could be accommodated in most rear seats, although one selected booster seat could not be correctly installed in the centre rear position.
A direct child presence detection system is standard for all rear passenger seats.
In Vulnerable Road User Protection testing, ANCAP reported generally good or adequate pedestrian head protection across much of the bonnet and windscreen area, with weaker results at some stiffer points.
The autonomous emergency braking system can detect pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists.
Forward pedestrian AEB performance was rated good, while reverse AEB Backover performance was rated marginal.
Cyclist and motorcyclist AEB performance was rated good.
The Seal 6 is fitted with autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, emergency lane keeping, blind spot monitoring, speed sign recognition and intelligent adaptive cruise control.
ANCAP rated car-to-car AEB performance as good, with crashes avoided or reduced in rear, junction and many crossing scenarios.
AEB Head-On functionality was assessed as marginal, while lane support systems were rated mostly good.
A direct driver monitoring system for drowsiness and distraction is standard.
“These results highlight clear strengths across these models.
The BYD SEAL 6 leads the group on Adult Occupant Protection, the Tesla Model Y L tops it on Safety Assist, and the MG4 EV Urban holds its own against both as a small electric car,” said Carla Hoorweg, Chief Executive Officer, ANCAP Safety.
The Tesla Model Y L rating is based on testing of the related five-seat Model Y, with additional assessment confirming its application to the longer-wheelbase six-seat version.
ANCAP noted child restraint installation difficulties in some second-row and third-row positions in the Tesla Model Y L.
