Jaecoo has given its J7 plug-in hybrid the dark treatment, launching the J7 SHS-P Black Edition in Australia from $49,990 drive-away.

Based on the range-topping J7 SHS-P Summit AWD, the Black Edition swaps the chrome for black finishes inside and out, and keeps the twin-motor plug-in hybrid driveline that makes it the most powerful J7 you can buy.

What does the Black Edition add?

The changes are all about looks.

Outside, the chrome detailing is gone, replaced with:

  • A black waterfall grille
  • Black wheels
  • Black exterior trims
  • Gloss-black mirrors and roof rails

Inside, the dark theme continues with a black headliner and pillar trims.

The rest of the Summit's equipment carries over, including a 14.8-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 10.25-inch driver display, heated and ventilated front seats and a Sony sound system.

How much more does it cost?

At $49,990 drive-away, the Black Edition is $2000 more than the J7 SHS-P Summit AWD it's based on, which is currently listed at $47,990 drive-away.

The front-drive Summit SHS-P sits at $44,990 drive-away.

Jaecoo hasn't said whether the Black Edition is limited in number, or which paint colours are offered.

What powers it?

Under the black paintwork is Jaecoo's Super Hybrid System, which pairs a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder with an electric motor on each axle for all-wheel drive.

Combined outputs are 260kW and 490Nm.

That's well up on the 205kW and 365Nm of the front-drive J7 SHS-P.

The AWD J7 uses an 18.4kWh LFP battery, with a claimed electric-only range of 80km (NEDC) and a combined petrol-electric range of up to 1200km.

It supports DC fast charging at up to 40kW, and Jaecoo claims a 30-80 per cent top-up takes about 20 minutes.

How does it compare with its rivals?

The Black Edition's most obvious rival is the BYD Sealion 6 Premium AWD, which is priced from $52,990 before on-road costs.

The BYD makes slightly less power at 253kW, but more torque at 550Nm, and its 26.6kWh battery gives a claimed 128km of electric range.

The J7 hits back on charging, with up to 40kW DC against the BYD's peak of about 18kW.

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is the other big name in the segment, but it's a lot more expensive.

The entry ES AWD starts at $58,990 before on-roads, and the Exceed is $71,640.

It makes 221kW and 450Nm from its 2.4-litre petrol engine and two electric motors, with a claimed 103km of electric range (NEDC).

That means the Black Edition undercuts both on price while beating both on power, though it gives away electric range.

When can you get one?

The J7 SHS-P Black Edition arrives in Jaecoo dealerships this month, with test drives starting from mid-November.
