Omoda has revealed the new Omoda X in Wuhu, China, previewing a more rugged SUV direction for the Chery Group brand.

Market launch plans are still to be announced, but the model’s animal-detecting thermal camera gives it an obvious talking point for Australia if it reaches local roads.

The Omoda X has 200mm of ground clearance, more than 700mm of wading capability, a 75kg roof load rating and an 1800kg towing capacity.

Its thermal imaging system has a recognition range of up to 90 metres, which could make it a useful piece of safety technology in areas where kangaroos and other animals regularly move near roads.

Omoda describes the X as its first “Mecha Cross”, with the model sitting above the Omoda 7 and below a future flagship called the G in the brand’s planned range.

An entry model called the Z is also planned, with Omoda saying the X, G and Z will arrive within three years.

Rugged design, physical controls and in-car tech

The reveal vehicle wore black wheels with yellow inserts, yellow brake calipers and yellow coil springs, along with chunky cladding and Mecha badging on the side sills.

An Off-Road badge also appears on the rear pillars.

Omoda has paired the exterior treatment with angular front and rear lighting, raised ride height and 19-inch wheels.

Inside, the Omoda X uses a 10.25-inch digital instrument display and a portrait-style 13.2-inch centre screen.

The centre stack includes physical switches, dials and buttons, including metal-effect toggle controls and a red start-stop switch.

Omoda says the cabin has 39 storage spaces.

The brand has also shown a configurable X Mode drive setting, a mic-free Omoda Open Mic karaoke function using four independent voice zones, and an NFC-based Mecha Pet companion that attaches magnetically and interacts with the driver.

A Cool Tech panoramic glass roof is claimed by Omoda to reduce the cabin temperature by seven degrees Celsius in sunlight.

Omoda also says the ProGloss Plus clearcoat is scratch-resistant and self-healing.

Powertrain details, full dimensions and pricing have not been released.

The reveal comes as Chery Group continues to expand its presence in Australia across multiple badges.

September 2026 VFACTS data lists Chery at 38,022 year-to-date sales, up 58.2 per cent, while Omoda Jaecoo recorded 15,456 sales, up 621 per cent.

Combined, the two brands accounted for 53,478 sales, up 104 per cent on the same period last year.

Other Chery-linked brands are also moving into Australia, including Lepas with the L6 electric SUV, the iCAUR V25, and Exlantix from mid-2027.

The Omoda X now adds another potential SUV to the wider Chery Group pipeline, with further timing, drivetrain and market details still to come.
