XPENG has named Guangzhou as the first city for Robotaxi commercialisation, with the approval intended to validate more than autonomous driving performance alone.
The company is also testing the service systems around the vehicle, including order response, dispatch, passenger pickup and exception handling.
XPENG says initial access to the Robotaxi service will continue to open gradually through invitation codes, with the service footprint expanding over time.
YOYO brand and technology base
XPENG has announced its Robotaxi brand as XPENG YOYO and opened autonomous driving registration to the public in China.
The Robotaxi program uses technology from XPENG's smart EV development, including four in-house Turing AI chips with a combined 3000 TOPS of computing power and the VLA 2.0 model.
That technology link is notable for Australian readers because XPENG has also been building its local EV presence through models such as the G6 electric SUV and the X9 electric people mover.
He Xiaopeng, Chairman and CEO of XPENG, has previously said XPENG Robotaxi will position itself as a technology provider and ecosystem enabler rather than directly operating large-scale fleets.
XPENG plans to deliver integrated solutions to global partners using vehicle platforms, software and AI capabilities, with revenue through hardware sales, technology services and commission sharing.
The company is also in advanced discussions with several leading European mobility platforms, with Guangzhou operations intended to form a base for localised overseas deployment.
The Guangzhou approval gives XPENG a city-wide setting to test fleet management, operating efficiency and service sustainability as the Robotaxi program moves beyond road testing.
