Chery Stockman Chief Says Ute Must Beat GWM Cannon
Chery Stockman product chief Mark Qi says the diesel PHEV ute must be better than the GWM Cannon, with Ranger, HiLux and Tasman benchmarks.
Chery Stockman Chief of Product Mark Qi says the incoming diesel plug-in hybrid ute has to be a better vehicle than the GWM Cannon, after previously working on GWM's ute program.
Asked by CarSauce in China whether the Stockman is a better vehicle than the Cannon, Qi replied: "Yeah, honestly, it's a must.
It's like your girlfriend or ex-girlfriend."

Qi said he worked on the GWM Cannon from its early stages, including its 2.4-litre diesel program, but clarified he was not involved in Hi4-T.
"No, not Hi4-T," Qi said.
"I was on the Cannon from the first, the diesel 2.4."
The comment gives a sharper edge to Chery's push into the ute segment, where the Stockman is being positioned around established and newer dual-cab names rather than only other Chinese-market rivals.
Qi said the Chery Stockman had been benchmarked against the Ford Ranger, Toyota HiLux and Kia Tasman.
Asked whether Chery sees the Stockman as a rival for Toyota and Ford products or for Chinese-brand alternatives such as the GWM Cannon and JAC Hunter, Qi pointed to the broader mix of product, pricing and marketing.
"For Australia, the Australian customer might have a better choice," Qi said.
"There's the product, the price, the marketing.
That's not me."
The Stockman is a diesel plug-in hybrid ute using two electric motors, labelled P1 and P3, paired with a four-speed DHT transmission.
CarSauce has previously covered further details on the Stockman diesel plug-in hybrid ute as Chery prepares its entry into Australia's ute market.
When asked whether the Stockman's hybrid transmission is similar to the JAC Hunter's, Qi said the JAC was not the development target.
"Honestly, this is not our benchmark," Qi said.
The Australian showroom target for the Chery Stockman is 1 February 2027.
