The GWM ORA 5 has begun arriving in Australia, giving the brand a $33,990 drive-away entry point into the electric SUV market.

First shipments of the all-electric SUV have landed at eastern seaboard ports, with deliveries to GWM dealer showrooms across all states expected within days.

GWM says prospective buyers can now book a test drive with their local dealer as the ORA 5 moves from reveal stage to showroom launch.

The SUV was shown locally at the Melbourne Motor Show in April, where GWM confirmed two variants and drive-away launch pricing.

GWM says nearly 3000 expressions of interest have been recorded by its national dealer network ahead of the first cars reaching showrooms.

The ORA 5 sits above the existing ORA hatchback in body style and market positioning, with GWM describing it as Australia’s most-affordable SUV-based electric vehicle.

That claim is based on its $33,990 drive-away starting price for the Lux, while the higher-grade Ultra is priced from $36,990 drive-away.

GWM Australia Chief Operating Officer John Kett said the ORA 5 was an important addition to the company’s local electric vehicle strategy.

"It’s no secret that we’ve been keen to add a fully electrified SUV to the range for some time and the ORA 5 SUV is the perfect model to kick start GWM’s EV ambitions," Mr Kett said.

"The philosophy at GWM is quite simple - to give more Australians access to smarter, safer and better-equipped vehicles at a price they can afford, and the ORA 5 certainly meets that criteria," he said.

GWM currently has a 127-strong dealer network in Australia.

The brand says it is targeting a Top 5 sales position locally, with the ORA 5 intended to become one of its core volume models.

VFACTS year-to-date data places GWM as Australia’s third-biggest plug-in hybrid brand and fourth-biggest hybrid brand, while the ORA 5 is intended to expand its battery-electric presence.

GWM says more ORA models are due to launch in Australia this year, as the company broadens its New Energy Vehicle range beyond hybrids and plug-in hybrids.

The arrival of the ORA 5 also comes as electric vehicle demand continues to grow in Australia, following a record electrified market share reported in the latest new-car sales data.

Final showroom timing may vary by dealer, but the first customer test drives are expected to begin as stock reaches outlets nationally.

GWM has not detailed any changes to the launch pricing since the ORA 5 was first shown in Australia.
