Nissan Australia confirmed it will not proceed with a Warrior version of the D27 Navara, despite previously previewing the off-road flagship with a Melbourne concept.

In a statement to CarSauce, Nissan Oceania Head of Communications Steve Coughlan said the brand had "progressed development while continuously reviewing the business case and our product priorities" since revealing the concept last November.

"With the upcoming arrival of the Navara PRO PHEV, we have decided not to proceed with the D27 Navara Warrior program," Coughlan said.

"Our priority is now to successfully launch the all-new Navara PRO PHEV next year, ensuring we deliver a product that meets customer needs and supports our long-term business objectives."

In a statement to CarSauce, a Premcar spokesperson said it "is still determining possible changes resulting from Nissan Australia's decision to not proceed as planned with the D27-series Navara Warrior program".

The decision marks a shift from the ute’s original local reveal, where Nissan unveiled the Navara PRO-4X Warrior concept in Melbourne on 19 November 2025 as part of the global debut of the D27 Navara.

At that reveal, Nissan said “a new Navara Warrior is under development by Premcar, with the Pro-4X Warrior Concept previewing its potential design and capabilities”.

In March 2026, then Nissan Oceania Managing Director Andrew Humberstone said the Warrior would arrive six to nine months after the Navara Pro-4X.

Nissan described the cancellation as "a Nissan business decision based on the overall market opportunity, the business case and [the] fact we have a new Navara Pro Plug-in Hybrid on the way".

What the D27 Warrior concept previewed

The Navara Warrior concept was based on the Pro-4X and featured lifted suspension using Lava Red springs and dampers, a wider track, 17-inch wheels on 32.2-inch all-terrain tyres and a unique suspension tune.

It also had a multi-piece underbody bash plate system, extra recovery points, a tub liner and a tailgate assist mechanism.

The current D27 Navara is based on the Mitsubishi Triton and uses a 2.4-litre bi-turbo diesel engine producing 150kW and 470Nm, matched with a six-speed automatic transmission.

It is twinned with the Triton in every aspect except its Premcar-developed dampers, which are tuned for Australia and New Zealand.

The Navara Pro-4X sits at the top of the current ute range at roughly $68,400.

The decision lands after several years of Warrior-branded Nissan models developed with Premcar.

The program began in late 2019 with the Navara N-Trek Warrior, a collaboration with the Melbourne engineering firm.

The PRO-4X Warrior followed in September 2021, before the SL Warrior and Patrol Warrior arrived across 2022 and 2023.

A second Premcar facility dedicated to Warrior production opened in 2023.

More than 12,750 Warrior vehicles have been delivered, and Nissan has described the program as “one of Nissan Australia’s most successful initiatives of the past decade”.

The Y62 Patrol is now in run-out, with the Patrol Warrior leaving showrooms alongside it, but Nissan says it is still working with Premcar on the Y62 Patrol Warrior and values the firm's "engineering and manufacturing capability".

"We are actively exploring the potential for an all-new Y63 Patrol Warrior," Coughlan said, adding that Nissan has no new product announcements to make on the Patrol or the Navara PRO PHEV at this time.

Premcar is also now working with Mitsubishi on the Triton Raider, marking the first time the engineering firm has worked with Mitsubishi.

Premcar has said the two programs had different objectives, leading to distinct tuning and component packages.

Asked whether the Triton Raider affected the Warrior's business case, Nissan said Mitsubishi's product was "one of the factors we considered" as part of an ongoing assessment of its product plans and the competitive environment.

"However, we wouldn't characterise our decision as being driven by any one competing product," Coughlan said.

Nissan has also ruled out a Nismo Navara, with its ute focus now on the China-built Frontier Pro plug-in hybrid, which will arrive in Australia next year as the Navara PRO PHEV.
